The Herringbone vases are a result of my continued interest in creating visually complex three dimensional forms, in a relatively 'lo-fi', handmade way.
I am interesting in creating objects whose form, often detailed and visually complex, belies the hand-made, lo-fi processes by which they are created. On closer inspection the objects often reveal small imperfections, which are a result of the process and communicate the hand-made nature of the piece. Some of my objects are often assumed to be made by 3D printing, or CNC routing, but they are all handmade.
I enjoy this way of working, which is often challenging, and sometimes feels inefficient. However, I hope the story behind the process and imperfections communicate the fact they are hand-crafted and in turn add value.
In a similar manner to my Faceture vases, I have taken a pleat pattern and manipulated it to create a complex folded landscape. This is used as a flat mould into which I cast resin. This flat form is then then folded into the 3D form of the vase. From this form I cast then cast another mould from which the Herringbone vases are cast in a water based cement composite. After it is removed from the mould the casting is hand finished and etched to reveal the fine cement like texture.
Each vase in handmade in my London studio, and has a-non scratch cork base.
